By Shinkansen: Take a taxi from Karuizawa Station and ask for "Kobayashi's Shop in front of the Shiotsubo Onsen Hotel entrance." The taxi drivers haven't memorized this long name yet. At this time of year, it takes about 15 minutes one way. Be aware that it will take more than 30 minutes in summer and high season. By car: Turn at the "Nakakaruizawa" intersection on National Route 17 and enter National Route 146. After passing the Hoshino area, you will see the entrance to Shiotsubo Onsen Hotel on your right. ChefKobayashi Koji - A Chef with a Unique and Indomitable Spirit
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1958, he obtained a chef's license while attending university. Later, at the age of 26, he opened an Italian restaurant in Nagoya. It became popular but closed after three years, and in 1989 he moved to Italy. He was appointed head chef at Ristorante Vissani in Umbria after a year and a half there. After returning to Japan, he opened Fogliolina della Porta Fortuna in Nakameguro in 2002. It moved to Karuizawa in 2011. He is a truly indomitable chef who is unafraid of loneliness and sticks to his own sincerity.

The interior of the restaurant is furnished with a wood stove and writing desk, giving it a warm and tactile feel. Outside the window, seasonal scenery spreads out, from budding greenery to snow-capped forests, and the unique atmosphere of this place adds color to the food. There is only one main table that seats up to four people, making it a truly extraordinary room. Normally only one special guest can dine here per day, but during the summer, the restaurant changes its name to "Alberini" and opens up the terrace seating for casual lunches.

The dishes are, of course, prepared with the skills and sensibilities he cultivated at a famous Italian restaurant, and each one has an artistic and vivid flavor. One of the charms of this restaurant is that Kobayashi himself carefully explains each dish, allowing diners to enjoy the food on a deeper level.
